In 1920, a young designer called Lucian Ercolani started his own business in High Wycombe, the chair making capital of England. Here he perfected the technique of steam-bending wood in large quantities to form the famous Windsor Bow, and discovered how to 'tame' elm; a beautifully grained hardwood other furniture makers considered impossible to work with.

His company grew and prospered, and after the war helped to drive the movement for light, simple, clean-lined furniture in a break for the heavy ornate styling of the pre-war years and ercol quickly became established as one of the UK's premier furniture manufacturers.  Many ercol customers still own their furniture from this period, and with the ercol reupholstery service it can look fresh and new again.

For Lucian, it was always clear that design and people were to be the cornerstones of his company. He wanted to provide both aesthetically enjoyable and long-lasting, serviceable items that would serve his clients well. This ethos remains true of this private company, with his family and dedicated staff honouring his beliefs into the 21st century.

Reupholstering chairs and sofas for your continued enjoyment

Although the outstanding quality of our frames provide many years of enjoyment,  the cushions and covers eventually show the telltale signs of extended use. In response to this, ercol introduced the reCover service for reupholstering furniture in the early 1950s. This allows the reupholstering of chairs and sofas in the ercol range, so that you can carry on using your original frame, rather than having to throw them away and replace them - so reupholstering furniture offers environmental benefits too.

Because we always adhere to Lucian's ethos, when reupholstering chairs or sofas from our range, we don't take any shortcuts. When reupholstering furniture, we maintain all of our original production standards and use the original upholstery templates to ensure the correct dimensions - the most thorough furniture reupholstering service and one which cannot be replicated anywhere else.
